Meeting May 6th
Our next meeting is on May 6th – so not for another 2 weeks.
Advantage one is that it will give a few of our members a chance to send family/guests home in a safe and post volcanic atmosphere and equally it will give a few memebers stuck abroad a chance to get back here… without missing a meeting
Advantage two – it is UK Election night – so the meeting WILL finish around 9:30pm…. Promise

Benidorm Ultimatum
Surprise move in Benidorm motion of censure - The candidate as the town’s new Mayor says it will be withdrawn if three Partido Popular Mayors in Alicante province promise to resign according to the Typically Spanish website – http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news/publish/article_23062.shtml
The motion of censure presented against the Partido Popular Mayor of Benidorm, Manuel Pérez Fenolls, by a former party colleague and 12 Socialist councillors at the Town Hall is set for debate at a council meeting on 22nd September.
But the man who aspires to become the new Mayor of Benidorm says the motion will be withdrawn if three Partido Popular Mayors in Alicante province resign from the positions they gained through censure motions at their own Town Halls with the support of turncoat councillors.
Agustín Navarro has given the Mayors of Dénia, Villajoyosa and La Vall de Laguar two days to decide and has called each of them to the Town Hall at 12 noon on Wednesday, where he wants the three Mayors to sign a written guarantee that they will return the Mayor’s office at their respective councils to the party previously ousted by the Partido Popular in motions of censure – the Socialists.
The PSOE councillors in Benidorm were refused permission from party leadership to go ahead with the move to oust Pérez Fenoll, and applied to cancel their party membership after presenting the motion of censure.
Illegal Garage cuts water off to 2,000 homes
Some 2,000 homes in Cap de la Nau and Grenadella have been without running water since Friday
El País has revealed that the burst water pipe which left up to 2,000 homes in the Cap de la Nau area of Xàbia without mains water supply since Friday was caused by a garage built without permission over the decades-old pipe, crushing it with its weight. The paper said the Town Hall is considering taking action against the person concerned.
It’s affected a section of 360 metres which must now be replaced and which may not be in place until Friday. In the meantime, the municipal water company, Amjasa, have been attempting to re-route supply with provisional piping and began deliveries by water tanker on Monday.
Diario Información reports that the pipe which burst is almost 40 years old.
On the Costa de la Luz, residents of the Costa Ballena urbanisation in Rota will shortly start making their claims for damages for the lengthy cuts in supply they suffered last month. It affected thousands of people and led residents to cut off a local road in protest.
With thanks to – www.typicallyspanish.com
When I first heard that the pipe was nearly forty years old, my first thought was that the age of the pipe may have had bearing on its inability to withstand the weight – and then I remembered watching workmen repairing water pipes in Dorchester on Thames in Oxfordshire around 1972 – many of the square tunnels and counduits that protected the mainswater and drainage pipes in the village were Roman in origin – our late Victorian ancestors not seeing the point in digging new tunnels where they already existed…
So five questions remain – Was the garage really illegal? – Did Amjasa publish where the pipe was – assuming that they knew? Why didn’t Amjasa notice the garage – do they never inspect the area? - – will the legal holiday letting landlords recieve sufficient compensation to deal with their unhappy renters who have paid peak premiums to rent in August? – Will residents get sufficient compensation?
